Set inside a restored traditional house at Ueno Sakuragi Atari, Oshiolive lets visitors sample and select olive oils, specialty salts, and vinegars from around the world to elevate everyday meals.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Poured into a small tasting glass, the olive oil releases fresh aromas of green grass, herbs, and occasionally toasted nuts. Housed in Building 3 of Ueno Sakuragi Atari—a complex fashioned from three restored traditional wooden residences—Oshiolive is a specialty shop dedicated to curated olive oils, regional salts, and vinegars sourced from across the globe. Surrounded by bottles neatly arrayed amidst warm wooden interiors, visitors can consult with the owner and staff while tasting oils and seasonings firsthand to pinpoint their ideal flavor profiles.
The olive oil shelves feature a distinctively varied collection, led by a Tunisian extra virgin olive oil marked by fruity notes, a gentle bitterness, and a hint of spice. Inventive infusions featuring wasabi, garlic, or shiitake mushrooms also cater to home cooks looking to add a twist to everyday dishes. Many varieties are available in compact bottles, making them easy to pick up if you want to sample several flavors without adding bulk to your luggage.
Salt forms the shop's other cornerstone, ranging from unadorned sea salt to savory sesame-miso blends and fragrant truffle salt. Tastings reveal that these varieties do far more than add simple saltiness; they draw out the natural sweetness and savory depth of ingredients, completely transforming meats, fish, or roasted vegetables with a single pinch. The staff also suggest combinations of oil and salt to try together on the spot, helping you envision exactly how to put them to work in your own kitchen.
The vinegar selection is equally noteworthy, spanning rich balsamic imbued with smoky notes from manuka wood to crisp apple vinegars that can be mixed with sparkling water for an invigorating drink. Lingering in this tranquil space touched by Showa-era charm offers a pleasant opportunity to choose a thoughtful addition for your daily pantry.
